Overview of the Department of English

The Department of English at the College of Arts is one of the academic departments that focuses on the comprehensive study of the English language and its literature. The department aims to equip students with the linguistic, cultural, and cognitive skills necessary to understand and use English effectively across various fields. Established alongside the founding of Al-Shatt Al-Arab University in 1993, the department has since graduated a large number of qualified professionals who have made significant contributions to the labor market and the wider community in related fields.

The department aspires to develop a generation of young national professionals capable of keeping pace with global advancements through acquiring English language skills—as it is considered the world’s foremost international language—and embracing the cultures of other foreign languages, particularly English and French.

The department seeks to prepare qualified graduates to teach English at intermediate and secondary schools, as well as to work as translators between Arabic and English in both directions. Furthermore, it aims to supply the local and national job markets with graduates capable of performing the duties typically associated with language department graduates, in addition to undertaking other tasks related to translation and education.

The department also aims to:

  • Achieve academic excellence for students in the field of English language and literature.

  • Provide the labor market with qualified professionals in English-related fields.

  • Keep up with developments in linguistics, particularly with regard to the English language and its literature.

  • Strengthen the department’s infrastructure to ensure the achievement of educational goals.

  • Foster a healthy academic and psychological environment within the department.

  • Develop the skills and competencies of faculty members and administrative staff.

Admission to the Department of English is governed by the Central Admission Regulations issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. These regulations determine the admission criteria and minimum grade requirements for studying English in language departments. Applicants must hold a preparatory school certificate in the scientific (general or applied) or literary streams, or a diploma from scientific institutes with a specialization in English language exclusively.
